Base Batches Messaging Buildathon

We’re stoked to add a dedicated messaging buildathon as part of Base Batch 001.

Builders interested in driving the future of messaging on Base can jump in and get started building.

Overview

Messaging presents a huge opportunity for Base builders. Messaging is the largest use-case in the world, but it’s more than just conversations—it’s a secure, programmable channel for financial and social innovation. When combined with the onchain capabilities of Coinbase Wallet, builders have a new surface area to build 10X better messaging experiences not currently possible on legacy platforms like WhatsApp or Messenger.

Secure group chats & DMs are the new surface area for developers.

Coinbase Wallet & XMTP are bringing AI + crypto + mini apps into secure messaging to unlock use-cases never before possible.

This could include:

• AI Agents that trade, swap, bridge and more.
• Group chats with tokens and micro-economies.
• Mini-app games you play with friends in group chats

FOCUS AREAS

We’ve provided the following 5 areas to help focus your energy on where to start building agents for messaging.

• Utility Agents - Messaging meets productivity. Create agents that help groups plan events, split payments, manage shared wallets, or track action items. DMs and group chats become the new coordination layer with an agent powered by financial rails.
• Trading and DeFi Agents - Build agents that manage your portfolio, track trending tokens, notify a group chat of price actions, and help a user to rebalance holdings. Whether it's a DM or group chat experience, create an agent with serious knowledge of how to help a degen out.
• Agent and Mini App Interaction - Build a creative way for an agent to utilize mini apps. Your agent could launch a mini app directly inside a group chat for a multiplayer game, or use a mini app for visualizing a recent poll. Anything goes, bring the power of mini apps to the chat experience.
• Gaming Agents - Create an agent that facilitates a game in a group, this could be a known game like “Guess Who” for an icebreaker experience, or an agent sharing score alerts in a group chat.
• Social Agents - Build an agent that makes group chats more fun, interactive, and engaging. This could be dropping in curated content for the group, or an agent that helps people match for meetups, share recommendations, and rewards users for posting their recs!

Overview of Prizes:

• Prizes: 🥇10K | 🥈7K | 🥉3K (all paid in USDC)
• Messaging Demo Day Invitation: The top 10 teams will be invited to NYC on June 12 to demo their project.
• Base Batches Demo Day Invitation: The top 3 teams will be invited to Demo Day this summer with up to $1m in funding.
• Marketing & Distribution: All winners will be featured on Base social channels (X, Warpcast) plus get a global stage to present during Demo Day.

HOW IT WORKS

In order to be eligible, the projects must follow the below rules:

• Must submit one project per team.
• Must include a functioning onchain app at a publicly accessible URL.
• Must include an open-source GitHub repository for all source code in the app (showcase track submissions can have closed source code).
• Must include a video, with a minimum length of 1 minute (Intro, Demo, Problem Statement, Solution, Architecture Overview) .
• Must submit proof of deployment and 1+ transactions on Base mainnet.
• Submissions built before the Buildathon are eligible for submission, but must clearly delineate what new feature or product was built during the Buildathon.
• Must be built using XMTP
• Submissions must utilize AgentKit and Basenames to the extent possible.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

• Onchain: Built on Base and uses XMTP.
• Technicality: Functions as pitched.
• Originality: Innovation / originality to solve problems.
• Practicality: Usable and accessible by anyone.
• Aesthetics: Intuitive, easy-to-navigate.
• Wow Factor: Remarkable impact within time frame
